Is There Formal Training To Become A Coach?

Yes. And it’s rigorous.

I am a trained Coach, whose education includes both classroom and months of experiential experience.

In addition, while undergoing certification, I work with my own coach. This is a requirement of the program. And it offers me the opportunity to deepen my learning and continuously reflect upon my own coaching work and growth.

It’s important to note that the coaching industry is largely unregulated. This is an issue the International Coaching Federation (ICF), is working to change. Currently, individuals who have no real training, or who perhaps only trained for a few days or a week, are entitled to call themselves a coach. As you conduct your research, make sure to ask questions–especially around an individual’s experience and training.
